January 16, 2013

Daily Readings:

Reflection:
We know Jesus came to destroy death for us so that we can be with Him in Heaven.  Jesus was conquering death in a physical sense through His miracles.  Jesus was saving people from their physical death by driving out demons, illness, etc.  By conquering physical death He showed us His amazing power, and made it possible for us to have faith in His ability to conquer our spiritual death.

Big Picture:  Jesus has conquered death

Discussion Starters:
     Younger saints:
What does spiritual death mean?  (Spiritual death means that when a person dies they go to hell instead of spending eternity in Heaven with God).  What does it mean that Jesus has conquered death?  (Through His death on the cross Jesus died for our sins.  By His dying and rising again to new life He has made it so that we too might rise to new life in heaven after we die.)
Older saints:  Have you ever met or heard of someone who has experienced great physical healing?  Was their life transformed after they received such powerful healing and were given a new life?  How is Jesus’ saving us from spiritual death similar to that situation?  How have you been transformed and responded to the new life He has given you?

Fun Fact:  Actual grace is the supernatural help of God.  It helps to strengthen our will to do good and avoid evil.  God gives us this help when we need it and for as long as we need it (St. Joseph’s Baltimore Catechism No. 1, 2008, p. 50).

Saint of the day:

 St. Fursey
What they are remembered for:  He is known for founding multiple monasteries.  He is the brother of Sts. Foillan and Ulan.

  1. Be it in the physical sense, through your overcoming an illness or disability, or in the spiritual sense, through your turning from a sinful life or sinful choices, how has Jesus conquered death in your own life experience?
